The death of president Lincoln

Image
On this day in 1862, Abraham Lincoln nominates Edwin Stanton as his Secretary of War.  Stanton would be confirmed just two days later. It’s hard to imagine such an easy confirmation process these days, isn’t it?  ;) Stanton would become one of Lincoln’s closest advisors,  so perhaps it is unsurprising that he rushed to Lincoln’s side when the President was shot in April 1865. One witness later wrote of Stanton’s reaction as Lincoln lay dying. “Stanton’s gaze was fixed intently on the countenance of his dying chief,” Corporal James Tanner reported. “[He had] been a man of steel throughout the night, but as I looked at his face across the corner of the bed and saw the twitching of the muscles, I knew that it was only by a powerful effort that he restrained himself.”  When Lincoln passed away, Stanton spoke, although his exact words have been the subject of some dispute.  (In fact, one recent biographer, William Marvel, doubts that Stanton said anything at al...

This oil on canvas portrait of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt

Image
This oil on canvas portrait of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt was painted by artist Douglas Granville Chandor. Roosevelt sat for the portrait in 1949 at her New York residence. The painting features an inscription on the canvas that reads, “A trial made pleasant by the painter. Eleanor Roosevelt.”  Upon its completion, the portrait remained in the artist’s collection, along with a matching portrait of President Franklin Roosevelt. After Chandor’s death in 1953, it stayed in the possession of his widow. In 1965, the White House Historical Association obtained the approval of the Roosevelt family to negotiate and acquire the painting. Previously, no portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt existed in the White House Collection. Once the painting was purchased for the White House collection, Lady Bird Johnson invited more than 250 guests to the White House on February 4, 1966, for the presentation of Eleanor Roosevelt’s official portrait. Three of Roosevelt’s children, Franklin Jr., John, an...

The grief was too much for Sameera to bear.

Image
Wouldn't you rather forgive?  Iranian Sameera Alinejad had two sons and lost both of them. One died in a motorbike accident and shortly after, the other was stabbed to death by his own friend.  Certainly, the grief was too much for Sameera to bear.  While she couldn't hold anyone responsible for the motorbike accident that killed one of her sons, she was lucky that judgement was served to the guy who stabbed her second son to death in 2007.  After 7 years of being in prison, her son's killer (Balal) was finally sentenced to death by hanging in full public view. To also bring some form of soccur to the family of the boy he killed, on the day Balal was to be executed, the Iranian Islamic court gave Sameera the honor of pushing away the stool Balal would stand on so that he can finally hang.  On the day of execution, the crowd gathered to witness the execution and Sameera was alert, waiting for the prison guards to give her the go ahead to push the stool from...

A mother who was born without arms has revealed how she's adapted to looking after her toddler, using her feet to cook and clean.  Belgian artist Sarah Talbi, from Brussels has learned to live without her arms since birth, and has shared a glimpse of how she cares for her three-year-old daughter Lilia, by using her feet to do things like washing and dressing her.  To get Lilia out of her crib, Sarah has taught her daughter to put her arms around her neck and she uses her core strength to lift her out and place her on the floor.  The mother-of-one cooks by sitting on top of a stool in front of her worktop, holding the knife with one foot and the vegetables with the others.  But she told FEMAIL that she used to be really scared she would hurt her daughter when she was a newborn, because she was so 'disconcertingly fragile.'  𝐅𝐎𝐎𝐃 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓  People called him mad-man  but I was surprised when he moved close to me,  He said, “can I ask you a very important question?”  I nodded, in acceptance,  and then,  he asked, “am I a mad man?”   The obvious answer, from a sane person, will be, "no",  and that was what I said.  “Thank you!”, he replied;  then he said,  “just because I don’t see things the way other people do, does that make me a mad man?”  "No", I answered again.  He bent down, wrote “W”,  and asked me what he wrote.  At this point, I was already feeling ashamed,  getting involved in a lengthy conversation with him.  In a hurry to leave, I said “w”,  but I was amazed when he replied to my answer,  “You only see 'W',  because of the angle at which you are looking at it.  If you turn upside down, you'll see “M”;  If u look from the right side, it is “3”,  and looking at it...
