A WWI Saxon soldier Karl Agotz was a 37 year's old shopkeeper in Leipzig when in the fall of 1914, he was called up by his king, Frederick Augustus III, to fight for his country. At the time he was married with two young children. We often wonder if the person in the photo survived the war. In this case I’m pleased to say that Karl did survive the war and returned to Leipzig and his family. Unfortunately we do not know his unit. Some remarks on Karl’s uniform and gear: Leipzig is in Saxony (Sachsen), so as expected, the tunic is a M07/10 feldrock with Saxon cuffs. The helmet is a Pickelhaube with Saxon ‘wappen’ (coat of arms). The rifle is a standard Gew98 with the long blade M1898 bayonet attached. Boots seem to be brown leather with black polish added later. Soldiers did these because from 1915 onward the orders were to wear black leather but supplies never met the quota so they improvised. As the black polish wore off the brown reappeared. But for one woman in Brazil, who was visiting her family tomb, that’s exactly what she was in for. According to local reports, the woman, who has not been identified, was at a cemetery in Sao Paulo’s Ferraz de Vasconcelos when she heard some odd noises and saw some dirt moving near a grave. That’s when she spotted a man, buried alive, trying to pull himself from the ground. “I was terrified to see a man who I thought was dead, trying to get out of the grave,” the woman recalled later, according to local reports. The woman notified authorities, and emergency services arrived to dig out the rest of the man’s body; he had already managed to free his head and arms from the ground. Today 106 years ago, on March 11, 1918, British pilot Henry Ralph Lumley passed away following injuries sustained in a flight accident. His hospital case was important to the future development of facial reconstruction and plastic surgery. . Henry Ralph Lumley was born on March 20, 1892 and worked at the Eastern Telegraph Company in London, before enlisting into the British Royal Flying Corps in December 1915. . Lumley was admitted as an officer of the RFC in April 1916 and went to the Central Flying School in Oxford for pilot training. By July 1916 he had completed his flying training and passed the flying test. History Trivia April 29 Joan of Arc relieves Orleans (1429) During the Hundred Years’ War, the 17-year-old French peasant Joan of Arc leads a French force in relieving the city of Orleans, besieged by the English since October. At the age of 16, “voices” of Christian saints told Joan to aid Charles, the French dauphin, in gaining the French throne and expelling the English from France. Convinced of the validity of her divine mission, Charles furnished Joan with a small force of troops. She led her troops to Orleans, and on April 29, as a French sortie distracted the English troops on the west side of the city, Joan entered unopposed by its eastern gate.
