In 1759, after years of toiling and suffering on the plantations,

Image
In 1759, after years of toiling and suffering on the plantations, Takyi and his allies, Yaw, Sobadu and Kwarteng, who were also of Ghanaian descent, escaped into a cave far beyond their plantations to plan a rebellion. They escaped during the day when everyone was occupied with work or at night and returning before daybreak. With full support from Queen Nanny, Takyi’s plan was to defeat the British and all slave masters and create Jamaica as a separate and independent black colony. In May of 1760, Takyi and his followers started the revolt in the early hours of the morning, starting at the plantation where they worked, killing the owners and thus freeing all the slaves. In "Alouette", TWDDarylDixon 102, we find out a little about how Laurent came into the world

Image
In "Alouette", TWDDarylDixon 102, we find out a little about how Laurent came into the world.  His mother, Lily, was the sister of Isabelle; they shared an upscale apartment in the shadow of Sacre Coeur church in Paris.   She's been keeping her pregnancy a secret from Isabelle and won't even say who's the father Luckily for her, Isabelle insists that Quinn also takes the sister with them, as they escape the city together.  But then, the pain gets worse for Lily; they stop the car at a BP service station.  Quinn tells Isabel they just can't take Lily with them; she's too sick.  But, when he goes off for a moment, Isabelle gets back into the car with her sister and they drive off, briefly stopping when they see an ambulance where they think they can get help.  Instead, Lily gets bitten on the arm by a walker, but she doesn't mention it.  Later, they arrive at an abbey where Lily tries to deliver the baby.  The priest and nuns see that she's been bit...

On June 1, 1887... Ike Clanton, the only surviving cowboy from the "OK Corral"

Image
On June 1, 1887... Ike Clanton, the only surviving cowboy from the "OK Corral" gunfight, was killed when resisting arrest for cattle rustling by detective Jonas V. Brighton A short article published in the APACHE COUNTY CRITIC reported, "...Brighton had a warrant to arrest Clanton, on a charge of cattle stealing. A demand upon Clanton to throw up his hands was only answered by an attempt to shoot the officers. Phin Clanton, a brother of Ike, was arrested a few weeks ago, on a similar charge and is in the St. Johns jail awaiting trial." The ARIZONA DAILY STAR of Tucson added, "...as [the officers] were eating their breakfast...Clanton rode up to the ranch. When he saw the officers he reached for his Winchester rifle, which was fastened to his saddle and in the act of was fired at twice by Brighton, the first shot passing through the cantle of Clanton's saddle and the second passing through is body from right to left just below the armpits, killing him instan...

TODAY IN HISTORY: August 1, 1937 - The Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany became operational.

TODAY IN HISTORY: August 1, 1937 - The Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany became operational. The Nuremberg Trial would later bring high-ranking Nazis to justice. It was one of the first and the largest of the concentration camps within Germany's 1937 borders. Many actual or suspected communists were among the first internees.  Prisoners came from all over Europe and the Soviet Union — Jews, Poles and other Slavs, the mentally ill and physically disabled, political prisoners, Romani people, Freemasons, and prisoners of war. The insufficient food and poor conditions, as well as deliberate executions, led to 56,545 deaths at Buchenwald of the 280,000 prisoners who passed through the camp and its 139 subcamps. It was liberated by the United States Army in April 1945. Today the remains of Buchenwald serve as a memorial and permanent exhibition and museum.

The Lost Soldier Mine

Image
The Lost Soldier Mine It was in 1869, that Abner McKeever and his family were attacked by a large band of Apache warriors. The McKeever ranch was located at Gila Bend and a long distance away from the protection of Fort Lowell and Fort McDowell At the end of the raid, the Apache made away with over 20 head of horses, 6 rifles, ammunition, clothes, food and sadly Belle McKeever as well. Abners very own daughter.  After the Apache had left the now destroyed ranch, Abner rode out to Maricopa Wells which was not far away. Maricopa Wells was a popular and reliable watering hole with many pools of fresh ground water. Stagecoaches, mail carriers, miners, travelers and even soldiers frequented Maricopa Wells. As Abner entered the small population of Maricopa Wells he told his story with great emotion and urged every able man to take up arms and help him retrieve his daughter.  Over 15 soldiers were posted to guard the Wells and 6 joined Abner, as well as 5 miners. As the posse began t...

The Mormon Church officially renounces polygamy.

Image
The Mormon Church officially renounces polygamy. On September 24, 1890, faced with the eminent destruction of their church and way of life, religious leaders reluctantly issue the “Mormon Manifesto”in which they command all Latter-day Saints to uphold the anti-polygamy laws of the nation. The leaders had been given little choice: If they did not abandon polygamy they faced federal confiscation of their sacred temples and the revocation of basic civil rights for all members of the church. Followers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had been practicing the doctrine of “plural marriage” since the 1840s. The best available evidence suggests that the church founder, Joseph Smith, first began taking additional wives in 1841, and historians estimate he eventually married more than 50 women. For a time, the practice was shrouded in secrecy, though rumors of widespread polygamy had inspired much of the early hatred and violence directed against the Latter-day Saints in Illinois...

I've been too hard on myself lately.

Image
I've been too hard on myself lately. I feel like I couldn't give myself the love that I truly deserve. I feel disappointed for treating myself this way. I know that I am worthy of love and that I am enough, but I still feel so worthless at times. I've been telling myself some harsh words that can also hurt me. I lost respect and love for myself.  All I know is that I don't want to hurt myself anymore. I feel the guilt in my heart every time I treat myself poorly. It makes me sad that, until now, I am still learning not to hate myself. I am still learning to forgive myself so that I can finally accept myself wholeheartedly. It's quite sad when I can't even see my worth, but it's sadder when I see myself hurting because of the things that I think about myself. I often think that I am not good enough for everything, and that breaks my heart every time I say it to myself.

When you remember me,

Image
When you remember me, it means that you have carried something of who I am with you, that I have left some mark of who I am on who you are. It means that you can summon me back to your mind even though countless years and miles may stand between us. It means that if we meet again, you will know me. It means that even after I die, you can still see my face and hear my voice and speak to me in your heart. For as long as you remember me, I am never entirely lost. When I'm feeling most ghost-like, it is your remembering me that helps remind me that I actually exist. When I'm feeling sad, it's my consolation. When I'm feeling happy, it's part of why I feel that way. If you forget me, one of the ways I remember who I am will be gone. If you forget, part of who I am will be gone.

“You will lose someone you can’t live without,

Image
“You will lose someone you can’t live without, and your heart will be badly broken, and the bad news is that you never  completely get over the loss of your beloved. But this is also the good news.  They live forever in your broken heart that doesn’t seal back up. And you come through. It’s like having a broken leg that never heals perfectly—that still hurts when the weather gets cold, but you learn to dance with the limp.” Anne Lamott

In 1978, Robert Nesta "Bob Marley"

Image
In 1978, Robert Nesta "Bob Marley"  had returned to his home town after touring and living in the U.K. He was explaining to the youths in the pic that he was Bob Marley and that this was the place that he grew up in. The youths didn't believe him, saying that he is not Bob Marley. that if he was famous, he would have never returned there, to the impoverished place.  It's a very nice pic. when you hear the context of the story, it makes you cry a bit. Seeing how someone, who has made it internationally famous, is returning humbly back to his home village. They said that the more money he made, the more he would give to the poor and fight for the poor. This is why this man remains an inspiration to so many!

A glider pilot was stuck in trees 100ft in the air after crashing in freezing temperatures.

A glider pilot was stuck in trees 100ft in the air after crashing in freezing temperatures Rescuers tied the aircraft's 18ft wings to branches to prevent it from falling, before winching the man in his 50s into a chopper A freezing pilot spent more than four hours dangling face-down 100ft in tree tops when he crashed his glider. The flyer was left shivering in his cockpit while emergency services performed a delicate rescue operation. He was eventually lifted out and lowered down through canopy branches into the arms of his anxious wife. One onlooker quipped: "By the end of the day he could have done with a different kind of thermals. "It was Arctic conditions and he couldn't even rub his hands for fear of dislodging the plane." The pilot in his 50s took off from Southdown Gliding Club in Pulborough, West Sussex, on Friday lunch time as the coldest night of the year loomed. He came to grief seven miles away in Chanctonbury Ring in the £100,000 HPH 304 MS ...

DEAR DAUGHTER.

Image
DEAR DAUGHTER I hope with all my heart that I showed you the real me.  That I didn’t pretend I had it all together, or that life was not hard.  I hope I gave you the belief of you, in your core.  That I loved you enough, albeit messily, to code a blueprint for life.  To show you what love should look like.  And I hope I let you see me break, so you could understand, it is not an ending, rather a step.  And it’s vital.  Dear Daughter, I could not possibly have gotten everything right, and perhaps, thats the best thing I have given you.  That knowledge. No one gets it right.  We are not here to be perfect, we are here to love, to grow stronger and more bright with every generation. Grow brighter my love, brighter than me.  As it very much should be.  And when I can no longer be with you, remember, my cells live within you.  You cannot, ever, lose me.  Not really.   We are a deal, a two for one.  A team.  ...

The Ben Ben pyramid.

Image
The Ben Ben pyramid that has puzzled scientists for thousands of years and they have been unable to solve the mystery. The pyramid is made of black stone, but it is not an ordinary stone because all of its components are not found on earth.  The black iron stone is only found in space in space meteorites, and here the other puzzle appears because it's a very hard iron stone and difficult to mold and dig, but it's not difficult to break, so how was it cut with so much accuracy in angles and deviations ??  How was your face polished with such unique precision?  As were these very delicate inscriptions on the sides of the pyramid, scientists found it impossible for any tool, old or new, to carve these inscriptions except with a laser cutting tool.  And now we come to the last mystery, which is that the black stone of the iron meteorite, thanks to its composition, has a positive electromagnetic energy transfer in its surroundings that makes everyone who approaches feel ...

Ganga Zumbi, the African freedom fighter.

Ganga Zumbi, the African freedom fighter, Was born in Kongo in 1630, enslaved and shipped to Brazil to work as a plantation slave. Managed to escape, raised an army of enslaved Africans and founded his own kingdom of Palmares, with a palace and court. Ganga’s name must have come from "Nganga Nzambi" an expression meaning "God's priest" in Kikongo, language spoken in the Kongo empire.  Ganga Zumba was a hero & freedom fighter who was central to the history and modern-day struggle of the Brazilian Black Movement, having led an alliance of “independent settlements” called Quilombo dos Palmares. On this day in 1781, the Battle of Eutaw Springs is fought.

Image
On this day in 1781, the Battle of Eutaw Springs is fought. It would be the last major Revolutionary War battle fought south of Virginia.  George Washington’s victory at Yorktown was just around the corner! At this point in the Revolution, Americans were waging a war of attrition against the British in the Carolinas. They weren’t winning everything, but they were making the British pay dearly for their victories. Slowly but surely, the British were losing their grasp on the states. Late August found American Major General Nathanael Greene and his forces recuperating in the High Hills of the Santee in central South Carolina. Would you believe it was so hot that hostilities had been effectively suspended!? In the meantime, British Lt. Colonel Alexander Stewart was encamped about 16 miles away.  Greene decided to go after Stewart in a coordinated move with local militia. Soon, militia and Continental forces were gathered a few miles from Stewart, then at Eutaw Springs. Greene kne...

Falling Man, 2001:

Image
Falling Man, 2001: The most widely seen images from 9/11 are of planes and towers, not people. Falling Man is different. The photo, taken by Richard Drew in the moments after the September 11, 2001, attacks, is one man’s distinct escape from the collapsing buildings, a symbol of individuality against the backdrop of faceless skyscrapers.  On a day of mass tragedy, Falling Man is one of the only widely seen pictures that shows someone dying. The photo was published in newspapers around the U.S. in the days after the attacks, but backlash from readers forced it into temporary obscurity. It can be a difficult image to process, the man perfectly bisecting the iconic towers as he darts toward the earth like an arrow. Falling Man’s identity is still unknown, but he is believed to have been an employee at the Windows on the World restaurant, which sat atop the north tower. The true power of Falling Man, however, is less about who its subject was and more about what he became: a makeshift ...

The Serial Killer’s 175-Year-Old Head In A Jar.

Image
The Serial Killer’s 175-Year-Old Head In A Jar. Considered by many to be Portugal’s first serial killer, Diogo Alves was born in Galicia in 1810 and traveled to Lisbon as a young child to work as a servant in the affluent homes of the capital city. It wasn’t long before young Alves realized that a life of crime was better for turning a profit, and in 1836, he had himself transferred to work in a home located on the Aqueduto das Águas Livres. Despite the fact that those traveling across the Aqueduct were humble farmers returning home, Alves would lie in wait for them at nightfall, when he would rob them of their earnings. Afterward, Alves would throw them over the edge of the 213-foot tall structure, sending them falling to their deaths. Between 1836 and 1839, he repeated this process some 70 times. Local police initially attributed the deaths to copycat suicides, which led to a temporary closure of the bridge. Alves then formed a group of bandits, before they were caught while killing ...

On this day in 2005, a heroine passes away.

Image
On this day in 2005, a heroine passes away. Captain Lillian Kinkella Keil served as a flight nurse in both World War II and Korea. She remains one of the most decorated women in American military history. She wasn’t just any flight nurse. She was among the first, which made it more challenging. “She had to make it up as she went along,” retired Air Force Col. Barney Oldfield later said. “She was an airborne Florence Nightingale.” When World War II began, Keil was a registered nurse working as a flight attendant. Her life changed forever when a passenger suggested that she join the Army Air Forces. She could serve her country as a flight nurse. The training was no picnic. Nurses were expected to be physically fit. They had to learn to escape a plane if it were forced down over water. They were taught to swim through a burning oil slick, and they learned techniques to survive in extreme temperatures. Keil persevered, and she was among the first to graduate from the USAAF School of Air Ev...

HISTORICAL EVENTS HISTORICAL EVENTS: 1996-2000 1996 Elections in Bosnia After several years of fighting and the deaths of tens of thousands, leaders of the battling forces met on November 1 at the Wright-Patterson Airforce Base, outside Dayton, Ohio, to negotiate a peace settlement. The Dayton Accords were initialed twenty days later, thus effectively bringing about a conditional end to armed hostilities. The accords were reinforced with 15,000 American ground troops, whose introduction assured that the ceasefire was observed by all sides. In an effort to construct a stable political system in the troubled region, elections were held on September 12, 1996; 60-70% of eligible voters cast votes, resulting in a three-headed presidency representing all the major ethnic groups. 1996 Taliban Capture Afghanistan At the end of September, the Taliban captured Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. The Taliban originated from a group of students studying at a fundamentalist Islamic school. In a peri...

Stroll through Chinatown

Image
Stroll through Chinatown, and if you're not trapped in line at Howlin' Rays or munching on a slice of Phoenix Bakery's famous strawberry cake, you can discover local history through small signs on buildings and historical markers that dot the sidewalks. Today, the area faces more change, thanks to a new wave of gentrification. Nouveau foodie joints attract young crowds while old school restaurants still draw regulars. Developers erect high-end apartment buildings but some seniors halted a proposed rent increase. Born out of necessity for a community displaced by racism and civic development, the neighborhood has endured for more than 80 years — but the Chinatown we know today isn't Los Angeles's first such enclave. A man assists a child across the street on wooden planks in L.A.'s Old Chinatown, circa 1930s. The first person in the world to be executed using an electric chair.

Image
The first person in the world to be executed using an electric chair. Kemmler murdered Matilda "Tillie" Ziegler, his common-law wife, with a hatchet on March 29, 1889, and was sentenced to death by electrocution at New York's Auburn Prison. His lawyers appealed, arguing that electrocution was cruel and unusual punishment. George Westinghouse was the main financial backer of the powerful and potentially deadlyalternating current. After safety measures were taken in the future, AC would become the standard for distribution of main electric power. It powered the electric chair, and Westinghouse actively supported Kemmler's appeal because they did not want their electrical system to be perceived by the public as dangerous. The appeal failed, partly due to the even greater financial support of the powerful financial tycoon J. P. Morgan. Morgan was backing Thomas Edison and wanted to use the execution...

Our Matron always count 30 pupils in the hostel. I never understood why she always leave one out. I tried to tell her that we're 31 in the hostel but due to how harsh she was I never did. I love reading my novel every night once the lights goes out. My mom bought a rechargable torch for me which I used every night to read I was mostly joined by suzzy every night to read my interesting crime novels. We end up looking forward to the next page since we had to retire to bed early. In the morning we bathe together and dress up for school. Off we go. We share snacks together and including my milk and Milo. She was a good friend I have always wanted to have. Others in the hostel doesn't want to associate with me. They call me weirdo but I don't know why. Suzzy had her bed placed at the extreme of the hostel. I would always complain about it but she will always tell me "I'm good". Most times we sit and discuss about the novels we read and even act it. I loved her like...

Man's main concern is not to gain pleasure or to avoid pain but rather to see a meaning in his life.

Image
Man's main concern is not to gain pleasure or to avoid pain but rather to see a meaning in his life. That is why man is even ready to suffer, on the condition, to be sure, that his suffering has a meaning. But let me make it perfectly clear that in no way is suf- fering necessary to find meaning. I only insist that meaning is possible even in spite of suffering-provided, certainly, that the suffering is unavoidable. If it were avoidable, how- ever, the meaningful thing to do would be to remove its cause, be it psychological, biological or political. To suffer unnecessarily is masochistic rather than heroic. There are situations in which one is cut off from the opportunity to do one's work or to enjoy one's life; but what never can be ruled out is the unavoidability of suffering. In accepting this challenge to suffer bravely, life has a meaning up to the last moment, and it retains this meaning literally to the end. ~Viktor Frankl

What goes around comes around "

READ THIS SHORT STORY       " What goes around comes around " One day a man saw an old lady, stranded on the side of the road, but even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His Pontiac was still sputtering when he approached her.y Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn’t look safe; he looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. It was those chills which only fear can put in you. He said, “I’m here to help you, ma’am. Why don’t you wait in the car where it’s warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson.” Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to ge...
