In "Alouette", TWDDarylDixon 102, we find out a little about how Laurent came into the world. His mother, Lily, was the sister of Isabelle; they shared an upscale apartment in the shadow of Sacre Coeur church in Paris.
She's been keeping her pregnancy a secret from Isabelle and won't even say who's the father Luckily for her, Isabelle insists that Quinn also takes the sister with them, as they escape the city together. But then, the pain gets worse for Lily; they stop the car at a BP service station. Quinn tells Isabel they just can't take Lily with them; she's too sick. But, when he goes off for a moment, Isabelle gets back into the car with her sister and they drive off, briefly stopping when they see an ambulance where they think they can get help. Instead, Lily gets bitten on the arm by a walker, but she doesn't mention it. Later, they arrive at an abbey where Lily tries to deliver the baby. The priest and nuns see that she's been bitten, but it's early into the zombie apocalypse and probably too late to know about amputation anyway. Lily tries to breathe and push the baby out, but something is terribly wrong and this isn't a maternity hospital. (It's a little unclear whether she dies from the walker-bite or from the childbirth situation (loss of blood, etc). She dies on the table; the priest and nuns prepare to rescue the pre-born child. Quick as lightning, the tiny baby is surgically removed. The Mother Superior gently hands the little bundle of new humanity to Isabelle who is beyond grief. Isabelle slowly walks away; a statue of St. Laurent (Saint Lawrence) inspires her to give that name to her tiny nephew. Laurent remains in the abbey raised by the nuns and Pere Jean who give him an excellent education from books, but not much in the way of knowledge or skills beyond the stone walls of their isolated fortress.
