American anthropolgist Margaret Meade was asked by a student what she considered the first sign of civilization in a culture.

The student expected the anthropologist to talk about hooks, clay bowls, or whetstones, but no.

Meade said the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture is evidence of a person with a broken femur having healed. Meade explained that in the rest of the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run away from danger, go to the river to drink water, or hunt for food. You become fresh meat for predators.

No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal. A broken femur that has healed is proof that someone took the time to stay with the one who fell, healed the injury, got the person to safety, and cared for them until they died. recovers.

“Helping someone through hardship is the starting point of civilization,” Meade explained. Civilization is community help."

When did we lose this?
