On 18 August 1590, one of history’s most perplexing mysteries occurred: 

the Roanoke colony of Virginia disappeared. 

Established in 1585, the colony was troubled by lack of supplies, and 2 years later a relief mission was launched to England. 

When they returned in 1590, Roanoke was long deserted and its inhabitants were never found. 

The only clues left behind were the letters "CRO" carved into a tree, and "CROATOAN" carved into a post near the settlement's entrance.
