Together forever, 1880- Seen here are two graves in Roermond, Netherlands. The graves are in two different graveyards. This is because the husband, Jacob Wernerus Constantinus van Gorcum was a Protestant, and the wife, Lady Josephina Carolina Petronella Hubertina van Aefferden was a Catholic, which meant that they could not be buried in the same graveyard.

The couple got married in 1842, when Jacob was 33 and Josephina was 22. The couple were married for 38 years. When Jacob died in 1880, he was buried against the wall. When Josephina died in 1888, she requested not to be buried in her family tomb, but against the same wall as her husband. Their custom headstones say it all.
