On this day, 8 November 1875, pioneering Chinese revolutionary and feminist Qiu Jin was born in Xiamen, Fujian. She had an arranged marriage to a wealthy man; however she grew tired of him and went abroad to study, and at the same time began wearing men's clothes. Qiu later started a girls' school which was actually a training camp for revolutionaries to overthrow the Manchu royal family. After a failed uprising she was beheaded. Today she is remembered as a national hero in China.
