Ifeanyi was 19 years old when he fell in love with 17 years old Nkeni immediately she got admitted in Enugu state university.
These two teenagers fell in love and after their first semester, they started co-habiting. They lived together until they graduated.
You know the typical girl in love, she wanted them to get married after graduation: to pay her bride price and do the necessary things. But Ifeanyi as the typical Igbo boy he is was more concerned about how they should prepare for NYSC and starts hustling.
For Ifeanyi, getting married was not even in his agenda. But unfortunately, Nkeni got pregnant.
When she got pregnant, Nkeni was strongly against abortion. Although, he felt uncomfortable keeping the baby, but he had no choice.
Without informing Ifeanyi, Nkeni had to inform her mum she was pregnant and the man responsible is coming for her hand in marriage and everything will be settled before the baby bump appears.
When Ifeanyi learned about this latest development, he was visibly infuriated. He obviously had no plan for all the events as they unfold.
He kept all these as a secret, except his best friend and younger brother. He and Nkeni traveled down to Calabar and met with her people and her mum. Father was late.
They made arrangements and fixed a date for introduction.
When they went back to Enugu, he started hustling trying to beat deadline for introduction. For him, when everything is ready, he will inform his parents.
Two months past and Ifeanyi hasn't gathered cash and eventually, stoped planning. He kept promising his prospective in-laws that he'll come. They should give him time.
BY this time, Nkeni baby bump was already showing at 26 weeks. She got sick and was admitted at Parklane, ESUT teaching hospital.
Nkeni was diagnosed with Gestational diabetes and severe pre-eclampsia. She remained in Parklane for two weeks before she was discharged.
At this moment, Ifeanyi was already depressed, financially incapacitated and in debt. He could barely eat let alone his pregnant girlfriend. So, his best friend was helping in whatever capacity he deemed fit.
At 27 weeks, unknowingly to them, the baby was already dead and was floating. They were still hopeful because they still felt some "kicks".
At 29 weeks, mothers, please what's going to be the outcome of a 2 week dead baby in the womb? 😩
Ifeanyi came back to their self-contain house to see Nkeni lying on the ground. She was rushed to the hospital immediately.
Two days and she was still unable to move or even say a word. With tears in his eyes, he started making calls, called his dad. Called Calabar people and in less than 24hrs parents and relatives of Ifeanyi and Nkeni were in the hospital.
Surgery was undertaken to clear the rot inside her which had already gone far.
To cut the long story short, Nkeni died on the table there.
Ifeanyi was busy crying and cursing his world when Calabar people brought police and they whisk him away.
He was in police cell while his people made married arrangements. As he was released, he was taken to Calabar straight to perform every marital rite.
After everything, "Oya carry the corpse, it now belongs to you".
