In the Islamic calendar, a year is made up of twelve months and roughly 354 days. It is indeed close to the international standardized calendar we look up to—the Gregorian calendar. However, in such ways, it is totally different. Unlike January, its first month is known to be Muharram, and it is referred to as the month of remembrance and considered the most sacred month in Islamic culture.
The Hijri New Year, or Amun Jadid, is a celebration of continuity and beginnings; it marks the start of another year to come in the Islamic calendar. In Gregorian terms, this celebration falls on the 8th day of July this year. This aligns with the new moon, which serves as the beginning of each month in the Islamic calendar. The flow of the year goes on with the exception of the 12th day, known as Dhū al-Ḥijjah, whose length varies on a 30-year cycle to maintain the calendar in sync with the actual phases of the moon, and the days of the month alternate between 30 and 29. Muharram, the first month of the lunar-based calendar, marks the sighting of a new moon and the first moon of the new year.
The observance of this holiday symbolizes the continuance of faith, a reminder to all devout followers of Allah to strengthen their beliefs and reflect on themselves. Just like how the moon reflects the light it absorbs, this celebration ought to bring guidance and a ray of light to the people who worship and believe.

Islam being the second largest religion, with about 1.8 billion faithful believers around the world, and the Philippines, with 6.4% of its population being Muslim, observes the Hijri Calendar New Year as a public holiday. The advent, in celebration of the long-standing history and culture, reminds the community and the world of unity, and hope—for justice and improvements, for the world and ourselves.

In this time where patience and contemplation are crucial, may we find the strength and peace to practice goodwill and obedience. This is the day that love in our hearts should radiate, which hope fosters as we strive for a better world. Let us be guided by the light and always continue.
